The story behind this pile of rocks:
During 1995 visit, Nelson Mandela placed a few small rocks on the ground at the entrance to the quarry where he worked during his twenty-seven year captivity. Each of the other former political prisoners visiting on that day followed his lead, adding a stone to the growing pile. Robben Islander Mogaman Levy recounts that Mandela, upon placing the first few stones together, told the other former prisoners, "This is how easily a monument can be built"
